| | Numerous studies show a positive correlation between the concentration of ambient fine particles and adverse health effects. Therefore, air quality standards for PM10 (mass concentration of particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10µm) were introduced in Switzerland and elsewhere. However, these standards are regularly exceeded at urban and suburban locations and measures to reduce emissions of fine particles into the atmosphere are urgently needed. In order to develop effective emission control strategies and to predict the trend of future PM10 concentrations a quantitative understanding of source contributions to ambient PM10 levels is required. The objective of several studies performed or going on at Empa is to identify the main sources of PM10 and to quantify their contributions to PM10 concentrations in ambient air. |
