Biocides are incorporated into organic coatings in external insulation finishing systems (EIFS) to protect building facades against algal and fungal attack. They are designed to release slowly to the surface during wetting events; however, they potentially enter surface waters where they can do ecological harm. This work is intended to develop a stronger understanding of the release mechanism in order to more accurately predict source inputs and improve product design.
