Development – from the initial idea to the finished product

The mechanical engineering group at Empa in Dübendorf and St Gallen is responsible for the development of testing machines and equipment that are not commercially available. Naturally, we also adapt conventional commercial machines to different requirements and automate testing procedures. Close cooperation with our workshops enables us to produce optimized, cost-effective production designs. We view ourselves as generalists, happy to work closely with our project partners. Their specific know-how is very important for achieving optimum solutions.

We develop our ideas right up to the production maturity stage using the very powerful 3D-CAD program CATIA. This allows us to present complex functions visually in a way that our customers can understand even at the concept stage and then during the design phase. The data generated is incorporated directly in the production process via the CAM module, enabling complex 3D geometries to be produced.

Here are a few examples of equipment we have developed:
  • Hydraulic creep testing machines for concrete prisms
  • Elongation device for plastic films
  • Plastic films coating facility
  • Various vacuum chambers and vacuum components
  • Magnetic induction testing equipment for wire ropes
  • Life test bench for high-performance ceramics
  • Press for ceramic green compacts, var. ceramic nozzles
  • Test machine for artificial hip joints
  • Conversion of a 30 MN cable testing machine
  • Calibration device for pendulum impact tests
