  • As an accredited laboratory for static and fatigues tests, we offer tests for pre-tensioning cables and cable systems up to 55 parallel strands, locked-coil cables with an outer diameter up to 200 mm and anchoring systems for such cables.
  • Design and test of optimal damping systems, design of dampers and determination of their properties.

Controlled magnetorheological dampers for stay cable bridges
Empa and the industrial partner Maurer Söhne from Munich developed real-time controlled magnetorheological dampers that mitigate stay cable vibrations independent of frequency and amplitude with the same efficiency. The system is installed on the Franjo Tudjman Bridge near Dubrovnik and the Alamillo Bridge in Sevilla as retrofit measures after these bridges underwent large cable vibrations. In case of the Sutong Bridge in China and the Russky Bridge near Vladivostok in Russia, the system was installed on the 6 and 5, respectively, longest cables from the very beginning due to the very long cables, i.e. up to 540 m and 580 m, respectively.

Autoparametric excitation of cables
Internal resonance of cables used for cable-stayed footbridges can occur when the cable frequency is half of the deck frequency. This phenomenon is due to a nonlinear coupling between the cable and the deck, and can be solved theoretically by perturbation methods. Experiments on the indoor cable-stayed bridge at Empa show good agreement with theoretical results, and are used for design guidelines.
