Biological Degradation

We analyse the biological degradation of surface active agents in cleaning products, lubricants and other diverse materials under realistic and defined conditions. We offer standardised procedures for Biodegradability Tests. On inquiry we are also able to offer tailor-made test systems.

In our Laboratory, the procedures of OECD test 301B and OECD test 302B are routinely used. The test method OECD 301B allows to assess the "ready biodegradability". With the modified Sturm test OECD 301B the biodegradability of non-volatile, water soluble and insoluble substances is determined. The Zahn-Wellens-EMPA OECD 302B is the most widely used test to analyse "inherent biodegradability" and gives information about the absorption behaviour of a substance, in addition to its total degradation.

For simulation of the biological degradation, organism mixtures under their natural conditions are tested. For example, environmental consortia as found in activated sludge from sewage treatment plants, putrefaction towers/units, waters or soil.
