Dr. Mirjana Dimitrievska

Group Leader: Nanomaterials Spectroscopy and Imaging

Mirjana Dimitrievska is a group leader of the Nanomaterials Spectroscopy and Imaging Group at Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA) in Switzerland. She obtained her doctoral degree in physics at the University of Barcelona, Spain in 2016. Afterwards, she was working as a research scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL, USA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA). In 2020, she joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) as a project leader and finally in 2022 she joined EMPA.

She is an expert in Raman, photoluminescence and neutron spectroscopy, and her research is focused on development of new functional materials for optoelectronic and energy applications. Her achievements include creating new characterization methods for nanoscale detection of impurities in materials, as well as developing a new class of superconducting solid electrolytes for all solid-state batteries, and sustainable materials for ultrathin, flexible, and transparent solar cells.

She is a promoter of science to children, with organization of educational workshops (“Dancing with molecules”) and preparation of coloring books, which encourage children to learn about science through play.

She is an author of more than 70 scientific publications, and has received several awards for her contributions to development of new spectroscopic techniques and sustainable materials for energy applications (Emerging Young Leader (Journal of Physics: Energy) 2022, USERN award 2022, Prix Zonta 2021), as well as an award for the most outstanding PhD thesis at the University of Barcelona (2016).
