Transition towards a circular textile industry - Material flow analysis of textile waste in Switzerland

The textile industry is increasingly making effort to move towards circular economy, to increase the use of renewable and recyclable resources and therefore its environmental sustainability. As the Swiss textile industry develops products of high quality and high functionality, there is an opportunity to explore the recyclability of industrial textile waste and evaluate its potential circularity.

A first step to achieve this goal is to understand the current situation in Switzerland and illustrate it by a Material Flow Analysis (MFA). To conduct the MFA, data on the amount of waste, its material composition, its form, and the waste management will be collected in collaboration with Swiss Textiles via online surveys, expert consultations, literature review and statistical databases.

The results will enable to determine hotspots and look for appropriate recycling loops of textile waste.
