Research at the Center for X-ray Analytics

The Center for X-ray Analytics is active in the field of novel X-ray technologies and methods for materials science and biotechnology from the angstrom to the meter scale. The center performs experimental research and develops beyond-state-of-the-art X-ray analytics for European research institutions and industries. A team of experienced scientists and engineers with various, complementary backgrounds in physics, engineering, material science and computing works on research projects within Swiss and European frameworks.

The development of new materials is strongly connected to the possibilities for a comprehensive analysis of their properties. Also enhanced simulation possibilities require more detailed analysis. However, analytical methods do not only provide knowledge about the materials, but also support understanding of their production process. Empa’s Center for X-ray analytics is dedicated to utilize and continuously improve X-ray based analysis methods to support material research also under different environmental conditions. Therefore we also support the preparation for Synchrotron measurements. The analytical methods of X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques like HRXRD, 2D-XRD, GI-XRD and SAXS are stretched to their limits. Microstructural investigations are fostered developing and implementing state-of-the-art 3D tomographic imaging methods combined with 3D image processing/analysis approaches.
