National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (NABEL)

The National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (NABEL) is a joint activity of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and Empa.

The Swiss National Air Pollution Monitoring Network measures air quality at 16 locations in Switzerland. The stations are distributed throughout the country and represent air pollution levels at typical locations (e.g. urban roadside sites, residential urban areas, rural sites). Up to date data from NABEL stations and more information about NABEL can be found here.

NABEL measurement stations are involved in international monitoring programs. The rural stations Payerne and Rigi-Seebodenalp are part of the «European Monitoring and Evaluation Program», which investigates the long-range transport of air pollutants across Europe. Data from urban and suburban stations are transfered to the European air quality data base EUROAIRNET. The Jungfraujoch station is part of the «Global Atmosphere Watch» (GAW) programme of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and serves as a background station representing the chemical composition of the free troposphere in Central Europe.
