Dr. Evgeniia Gilshtein

Scientist at the "Thin Films and Photovoltaics" Laboratory

After her studies in Electronics & Nanoelectronics in St. Petersburg, Evgeniia Gilshtein received her doctorate in Materials Science from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. She then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Empa and has been a part of the researcher team at Empa's Thin Films and Photovoltaics Laboratory since the beginning of 2019.

Beyond conventional electronics

Dr. Evgeniia Gilshtein is working with the research team at Empa's Coating Competence Center (CCC) on flexible printed electronics that are:

transparent
lightweight
mechanically durable and
environmentally friendly

She has demonstrated the implementation of printed structures such as protective coatings, touch sensors and transistors with unique properties. Now she plans to use these findings to improve performance further and translate this into sustainable solutions for society.

The highlight

Whether as sensor-equipped wearables for better health monitoring, implantable electronics for better medical diagnosis, or as displays for consumer electronics – flexible and printed electronics could play a key role in our path to sustainability. Research conducted at Empa shows how much further the application range of such electronics could go – by adding biodegradable and ultra-lightweight features to the mix.
