ETH Zurich appoints Empa researcher professor

Titular Professorship for Dominik Brunner

Dec 13, 2019 | CORNELIA ZOGG

Empa researcher Dominik Brunner was appointed titular professor by ETH Zurich. He teaches environmental system sciences in the ETH Department and heads a research group at Empa that uses modelling to analyse the relationship between pollutant emissions, air quality and climate processes.

Brunner is a researcher in Empa's "Air Pollution / Environmental Technology" lab, where he has been head of the "Atmospheric Modelling and Remote Sensing" research group since 2006. He specialises in air quality modelling, the so-called inverse estimation of greenhouse gas emissions, the remote sensing of trace gases and the investigation of urban air quality and the inner-city climate. Together with his team at Empa, he is developing a series of advanced atmospheric models that focus on regional to urban scales.

Brunner completed his physics studies with a focus on atmospheric physics and quantum electronics at ETH Zurich in 1992, after which he received his doctorate, also from ETH Zurich. After a two-year research stay in the Netherlands at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, he returned to ETH Zurich in 2000. There he still teaches the master's course "Tropospheric Chemistry" at the Department of Environmental Systems Sciences and part of the course "Building Physics IV: Urban Physics" at the Department of Architecture.
