HYDROGEN
In summer, when surplus solar electric energy is available and the batteries are sufficiently charged, hydrogen is produced by water electrolysis and stored in the metal hydrate tanks. In prolonged times of solar energy deficit, such as in the winter season, stored hydrogen is used by the fuel cell to produce electricity. The hydrogen is also used all year round for cooking by means of catalytic combustion. To this purpose a novel catalytic hydrogen stove was developed at Empa.
