All required electric energy for SELF is harvested from solar radiation with photo voltaic (PV) cells. Single crystalline cells of up to 20 % conversion efficiency are used. Electric energy is stored in batteries for short term storage of several days and as hydrogen for long term storage from summer into winter season.
PV panels cover both roof and sun shade. Installed are frameless cells in a dual tempered glass sandwich of 2 x 2 mm. The panels feature high strength at minimum weight. For system simplicity thermal collectors were not installed. PV panels in combination with a heat pump are well able to cover the hot water demand. Issues with over production of hot water in summer are avoided.
